Cigna New Zealand has awarded 21 year old Ohope local, Ntombiyothando (Thando) Siziba, the 2019 Cigna Actuarial Scholarship.

The award will grant her $5,000 towards her tertiary fees at Victoria University of Wellington, where she is studying a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Actuarial Science and Statistics.

Established in 2015, the Cigna Actuarial Scholarship aims to enable and encourage students at Victoria University to consider the actuarial profession as a career path.

Siziba was chosen as the 2019 recipient due to the high quality of her application, great character and passion for her degree which demonstrated the potential she has in actuarial science.

Cigna’s Chief Actuary, Nathan Thomas, said, “In addition to Thando’s application we received really strong applicants this year – it’s great to see there are dedicated students striving for a career in actuarial science.”

The insurer stated it is looking at extending its scholarship offering to Auckland in the coming years to encourage and support more students studying actuarial science.

“Overall, we want to help develop and support future talent in the actuarial field. As a result of our scholarship we’ve seen very capable and forward-thinking students enter into the workforce which is exciting for the future of the sector,” said Thomas.

Victoria University is the only university in New Zealand to offer Actuarial Science as a major.

“Cigna is dedicated to developing actuarial sciences with Victoria University by supporting those wishing to study the profession,” said Thomas.

“Thando will gain some really valuable work experience when she comes on board at Cigna next summer.”
