If the requirements of the Privacy Act 2020, which becomes law on 1 December, are still a mystery to you then separate seminars from two organisations will bring you up to speed.

This week Strategi Group is holding two free online seminars with each one covering off the key changes between the current Privacy Act and the new one.

In addition it will examine the 13 privacy principles and what they mean for you and your business, what needs to change in your business, and how to practically implement the checklist that will be provided to all registrants by the company.

Company privacy policy changes, changes to your obligations register and compliance assurance plan, along with continuing professional development tips for upskilling you and your staff on the new Act will also feature.

Strategi Group’s first Privacy Act seminar will start at 9.30am (session 1) on Thursday 29 October and be repeated at 2pm (session 2).

Privacy Commissioner

Privacy Commissioner John Edwards is also hosting a seminar and Q&A about the new Privacy Act. His event is on Thursday 5 November at the Wharewaka Function Centre, Wellington.

Edwards says that with less than a month before the law change takes effect there will be much to discuss.

John Edwards, Privacy Commissioner, is hosting a seminar on 5 November.

“The new law ushers in a new legal framework for the protection of personal information, including mandatory privacy breach notification,” he says.

He says the most notable change in the new Act will be a requirement to report serious privacy breaches.

Notifiable privacy breaches will require organisations to notify the Privacy Commissioner, and any affected individuals, if there is a breach that has caused serious harm, or poses a risk of causing someone serious harm.

The changes, which include new criminal offences, are a big step change in the New Zealand privacy environment, says the Privacy Commissioner.
