Health claims data from nib for the month of January 2025 is again dominated by cardiac surgeries, but the highest claim paid was for spinal surgery on a very young man.
Nib’s data, published on its website, shows the most expensive claim for January was $101,000 for spinal surgery on a 16-year-old male.
The top five January claims, nib’s data shows, also included three cardiac surgeries ranging in cost from $54,000 to $85,000 and one digestive surgery ($53,000).

The total cost of the five most expensive surgeries funded by nib in the latest month adds up to $349,000 and the average age of the five claimants is 54.8 years.
