When the Government scrapped its proposed income protection scheme last week, there appeared to be a collective sigh of relief from at least two industry leaders – namely the FSC’s Richard Klipin and Katrina Shanks of Financial Advice NZ.

Both welcomed Prime Minister Chris Hipkins’ decision to shelve a key Labour policy that had the backing of former PM Jacinda Ardern along with most worker unions.

“The social insurance scheme is off the table and will not proceed as proposed,” said Hipkins.

Financial Advice NZ’s CEO Shanks says her organisation is heartened to see the Government has pushed the pause button on the proposal saying there had been “…little or no public debate” about the scheme.

The proposed scheme, if put in place, would have increased the tax liability on both employees and employers, and provide an income for most people who lost their job through no fault of their own.
